TOP 10 FILMS - WORLDWIDE
1. HARRY POTTER & THE DEATHLY HALLOWS, PT. 2 (WB) - $1.328 bil
The final film in J.K. Rowling’s beloved franchise also became the highest grossing film of the series, both domestic and globally. Goodbye Harry, we’ll see you in 3D, soon!
2. TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (PARAMOUNT) - $1.123 bil
There are already rumors about Michael Bay returning for a fourth film, and why not, the threequel’s worldwide total was bigger than any previous installments.
3. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (DISNEY) - $1.043 bil
While North American audiences didn’t exactly embrace this fourth film, overseas audiences absolutely keelhauled it, washing up $802 million on foreign shores—that’s a booty with $148 million more than “At World’s End.” If Depp is willing, there will be another, matey.
4. KUNG FU PANDA 2 (PARAMOUNT) - $663 mil
Usually, a sequel, hot off the heels of the original’s success, tops the original by a wide margin. Not so here, as Po and Co. dipped domestically and increased only marginally overseas. This was supposed to perform like "Shrek 2."
5. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PT. 1 (SUMMIT) - $634 mil*
Still sucking down profits worldwide, the fourth film still has a chance of matching “New Moon” and “Eclipse” which hovered around $700 million, each. The final dish will be served up next fall, and will likely be the highest grossing film in the franchise. Still time for a 3D retrofit?
6. FAST FIVE (UNIVERSAL) - $626 mil
It’s doubtful anyone thought this car flick would take the checkered flag vs. “Cars 2” but Vin Diesel and his crew revved up their best outing yet. And don’t worry gearheads, “Fast 6” is already a foregone conclusion. I mean, what else are Diesel and Paul Walker doing???
7. THE HANGOVER: PART II (WB) - $581 mil
Yes, the binge boys took their talents to Thailand, and did a redo. And guess what? It worked! The sequel grossed $100 million more than the original. “Part III” being scripted now, and may roll as early as next year.
8. THE SMURFS (SONY) - $562 mil
Blue was definitely the new green in 2011, as Sony had their biggest hit of the year in a kiddie flick released in August. Talk about Smurfy—overseas audiences pulled in more than $400+ million.
9. CARS 2 (DISNEY) - $551 mil
While many found this to be a disappointment (at least by Pixar standards), this sequel actually grossed more than its predecessor and even “Wall-E.” Besides, this was made for one reason: merchandising.
10. RIO (FOX) - $484 mil
Get this. “Rio” is the only original property to make the Top 10 list in 2011. In fact, 8 of the Top 10 films were sequels this year, so expect many, many more in years to come. And, yes, the birds of Rio will likely sequel-ize, too.
