Bradley Cooper given Academy Membership

Casual moviegoers can tell you what the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is, but it takes a die-hard to actually tell you who is in the group, particularly because the fluid membership body keeps increasing on an annual basis.

For example, the Academy invited 178 artists and executives to join its roster. Invitees for the 2011 class include Russell Brand, Bradley Cooper, Lisa Cholodenko, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Jesse Eisenberg, Tom Hooper, Beyonce Knowles and Jennifer Garner. Wait, two Arthur stars? That has to be a clerical error. Either that or the remake’s poised for a Best Picture run come November and December.

“These individuals are among the best filmmakers working in the industry today,” Academy President Tom Sherak said in a statement. “Their talent and creativity have entertained moviegoers around the world, and I welcome each of them to our ranks.”

In an unprecedented move, the Academy also extended an invitation to documentary filmmaker Tim Hetherington (Restrepo), who passed away in April. The Documentary Branch recommended he be included in the 2011 class, and the Academy agreed.
